Ford is recalling over 20,000 hybrid SUVs due to a battery issue that could put drivers at risk. The recall affects certain Ford Escape and Lincoln Corsair plug-in hybrid models from 2020 to 2024. The problem? A defect in the battery cells supplied by Samsung SDI. A flaw in the battery’s internal structure could cause a sudden loss of power while driving—or worse, overheating and even a fire. Ford has already received four reports of overheating incidents, but thankfully, no injuries or accidents so far. If you own one of these vehicles, it’s important to know what steps to take to protect yourself. Keep reading to find out what this Lincoln Corsair and Ford Escape recall means for you and how Ethen Ostroff Law can help.

Lincoln Corsair and Ford Escape Recall Over Battery Defect

Ford has recalled about 20,484 plug-in hybrid SUVs from model years 2020 to 2024 due to a battery defect that could lead to serious safety risks. Announced on December 31, 2024, the recall affects certain Ford Escape and Lincoln Corsair models. The problem comes from a flaw in the high-voltage battery cells, which were supplied by Samsung SDI. During manufacturing, tiny defects and pressure points may have damaged a thin separator inside the battery. If this layer fails, it could cause an electrical short, leading to sudden power loss or, in extreme cases, a fire.

Which Models Are Recalled?

Ford’s recall covers these plug-in hybrid SUVs with 2.5-liter four-cylinder engines:

  • 2020–2024 Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid
  • 2021–2024 Lincoln Corsair Grand Touring

These vehicles were built between July 10, 2019, and April 17, 2024.

What's Wrong with the Batteries?

Ford’s recall involves a serious defect in the high-voltage battery cells supplied by Samsung SDI. Here’s what’s happening:

  • Faulty Separator Layer: The thin barrier inside the battery that prevents components from touching may be damaged, increasing the risk of a short circuit.
  • Power Loss While Driving: A short circuit could cause the vehicle to suddenly lose power, which can be dangerous, especially on highways or in heavy traffic.
  • Overheating Risk: A defective battery can generate excess heat, potentially leading to system failures or shutdowns.
  • Fire Hazard: In severe cases, overheating can cause smoke, gas leaks, or even a fire.

Ford has already received reports of overheating incidents, which is why they’re recalling these vehicles. If you own one, it’s important to understand the risks and what steps to take next.

How Can You Tell If There's a Problem?

If your vehicle has this defect, you might notice:

  • Dashboard Warning: A “Stop Safely Now” message may appear, signaling an issue with the high-voltage battery.
  • Loss of Power: Your vehicle could suddenly slow down or even shut off while driving.
  • Overheating Risk: Ford has reported four cases of overheating, though no accidents or injuries have been linked to the issue so far.

What Are the Risks?

Driving a vehicle with a defective battery can be dangerous. Here’s why:

  • Sudden Power Loss: Your car could lose power unexpectedly, which is especially risky on highways or in heavy traffic.
  • Internal Short Circuits: A flaw in the battery cells can lead to internal short circuits, increasing the risk of failure.
  • Crash Risk: If the car shuts down while driving, it could become difficult to control, increasing the risk of an accident.
  • Overheating: A faulty battery can generate too much heat, potentially leading to performance issues or system failure.
  • Fire Hazard: In severe cases, overheating could cause smoke, gas release, or even a fire.

While no accidents or injuries have been reported, Ford isn’t taking any chances—hence the Ford electric vehicle recall.

How Is Ford Fixing the Problem?

Ford has a plan to address the battery defect and keep drivers safe:

  • Owner Notifications: Ford began sending recall notices on January 20, 2025, with details on how to get the issue fixed.
  • Software Updates: Dealerships will update the Battery Energy Control Module software to detect and reduce the risk of a short circuit.
  • Battery Pack Replacement: If necessary, Ford will replace the high-voltage battery pack at no cost to the owner.

If you own one of the recalled vehicles, it’s important to follow Ford’s instructions and get the issue fixed as soon as possible.

What Should You Do?

If your Ford Escape or Lincoln Corsair is included in this recall, here’s what to do next:

  • Schedule a Repair: If your vehicle is part of the Ford Escape Lincoln Corsair battery recall, book a service appointment as soon as possible to reduce the risk.
  • Pay Attention to Warning Signs: Until your car is repaired, watch for dashboard alerts, sudden power loss, or anything unusual while driving.
  • Stay Updated: Keep an eye on Ford and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announcements in case new details emerge.
  • Follow Ford’s Instructions: Ford will provide guidance on what steps to take next. Make sure to follow them to get your vehicle fixed safely.

Acting quickly can help keep you, your passengers, and others on the road safe.

What Does the NHTSA Report Say?

The NHTSA has officially labeled this Ford electric vehicle recall as 24V-954, while Ford’s internal reference is 24S792. The recall was issued because of a defect in the high-voltage battery that could cause power loss or even a fire. The NHTSA urges owners of affected vehicles to act quickly and schedule repairs with their dealership. Ford has already started sending out notifications, and all repairs will be free. To check if your vehicle is included, enter your VIN on the NHTSA recall website or Ford’s recall lookup tool.

Why Does This Recall Matter?

This recall matter because it raises serious safety concerns for hybrid vehicle owners. Plug-in hybrids are designed to be fuel-efficient and eco-friendly, but a defect like this can put drivers at risk. No one expects their car to lose power on the road or, worse, catch fire. As more hybrid and electric vehicles hit the market, manufacturers must ensure their batteries are safe and reliable. Ford’s recall serves as a reminder that car companies must be held accountable for defects, and owners should act quickly to protect themselves and others.

The company is also updating its factories to build more EVs.
