Kawasaki bikes are a go-to for riders who want speed, control, and performance, especially when it comes to motocross and cross-country riding. Whether you’re racing on weekends or hitting trails for the thrill of it, the KX line has always been built to push limits.

But recently, Kawasaki issued a recall for some of its 2025 Competition and Cross-Country Motorcycles. If you ride or own one of these, this might’ve already come across your radar. It’s part of a stop-sale notice that’s already in place for certain models, tied to a Kawasaki KX450 stop-sale recall 2025 update.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • You have the right to get it fixed at no cost.
  • You may even be eligible for compensation.

This Kawasaki recall affects your safety, your time, and your trust in their brand. Stay informed so you can protect yourself and your investment.

Kawasaki Recalls 2025 KX Bikes for Crash Risks

If you ride a Kawasaki KX450, KX450SR, or KX450X from the 2025 lineup, there’s a recall you need to know about. On April 24, 2025, Kawasaki Motors Corp. U.S.A. announced a Kawasaki recall for around 3,400 competition and cross-country motorcycles because of a possible gear failure that could lead to a crash.

The issue: There’s a chance the primary gear on the crankshaft can fail while the bike is in use. That kind of mechanical problem can be dangerous, especially for riders using these bikes in high-performance settings. Because of this, the company has issued a Kawasaki safety recall and a stop-sale order on the affected models.

The recall covers the following 2025 motorcycles:

  • KX450 (model number KX450MSFNN, VIN range JKAKXGMCSA008598 to JKAKXGMCSA011475)
  • KX450SR (model number KX450PSFNN, VIN range JKAKXGPCSA000012 to JKAKXGMCSA000971)
  • KX450X (model number KX450NSFNN, VIN range JKAKXGNCSA002194 to JKAKXGNCSA003159)

All three are competition and cross-country bikes, finished in the signature Kawasaki lime green. So far, there haven’t been any injuries reported, but Kawasaki isn’t taking chances. These bikes were sold through authorized Kawasaki dealers nationwide from June 2024 to March 2025, priced between $10,500 and $13,600. If yours was made in Japan and imported by Kawasaki Motors Corp. U.S.A., check your VIN. It might be part of recall number 25-238.

For complete recall details, visit the official pages at the CPSC and Kawasaki’s recall center.

What You Should Do if You Own a Recalled 2025 Kawasaki KX450

Even though there haven’t been any reported injuries, this Kawasaki motorcycle recall was issued for a reason. A failing crankshaft gear is no small issue. It can lead to engine failure and a possible crash.

If your 2025 KX450, KX450SR, or KX450X is part of the recall, don’t wait around. There are a few simple things you should do to stay safe and get the issue taken care of.

  • First things first: park the bike. It’s not worth the risk. Kawasaki is telling owners to stop riding until the repair’s done. That gear issue could cause serious problems mid-ride, and it’s better to be cautious.
  • Check your VIN to confirm the recall. Grab your bike’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)—you’ll find it stamped on the right side of the frame head pipe. Then visit Kawasaki’s recall page or the NHTSA recall lookup tool to see if your model falls under the Kawasaki motor recall.
  • Contact an authorized Kawasaki dealer. Once you’ve confirmed your bike is part of the Kawasaki 2025 KX motorcycle recall, schedule a repair with your local dealer. It’s free. They’ll replace the defective gear with one that meets proper durability standards, so you can get back to riding safely.
  • Keep your records. Hang on to any paperwork from the dealer—emails, service orders, receipts—just in case any legal, insurance, or warranty issues come up later.
  • Don’t try to fix it yourself. Even if you’re handy with bikes, this isn’t the kind of fix you should DIY. Only a certified Kawasaki dealer can do the repair in a way that keeps your recall coverage and warranty intact.
  • Need help? Reach out to Kawasaki. If you’re running into issues or have questions about the process, you can call Kawasaki Motors USA toll-free at 866-802-9381 (Monday–Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. PT).

The sooner you take care of this, the sooner you can ride again with peace of mind. This recall Kawasaki issued is a safety warning you shouldn’t ignore.

Can You Sue Kawasaki Over the Recall?

If you’ve been in a crash tied to the 2025 Kawasaki recall, you may have the right to take legal action. The recall was issued because a defective primary gear in the crankshaft can fail and cause the engine to cut out mid-ride. That kind of failure can easily lead to loss of control and a serious accident.

Even though no injuries have been officially reported yet, the danger is real. A stop-sale was put in place, and Kawasaki has acknowledged the issue. But if you or someone you love was hurt, or if your motorcycle was damaged because of this defect, you may be able to sue Kawasaki for compensation.

What You Can Do If Your Kawasaki Crash Was Caused by the Defect

If your accident ties back to the gear problem behind the Kawasaki safety recall, you’ve got a couple of legal paths to look at. The right one depends on how badly you were hurt and what kind of impact the crash had on your life.

File Your Own Product Liability Lawsuit: This route makes the most sense if you were seriously injured or had major losses. It gives you the chance to go after Kawasaki directly for everything the crash has cost you.

You could have a case if:

  • The gear was poorly designed, making the bike unsafe.
  • The part on your specific motorcycle didn’t meet quality standards.
  • Kawasaki waited too long to warn riders or didn’t say enough.

You might be able to recover money for:

  • Medical bills
  • Missed work
  • Pain, stress, and recovery time
  • Repair or replacement of your bike

Join a Class Action Lawsuit: If there’s already a case like Melendez v. Kawasaki happening, you might have the option to join. That means you’d be grouped with other owners who were affected by the same issue. This is a solid option if your injuries weren’t as severe, but the recall still caused you problems—like downtime, repair costs, or just dealing with a bike you couldn’t safely ride.

What to Gather If You're Suing Kawasaki Over a Defect

If your crash involved one of the recalled Kawasaki motorcycles, the right evidence could help prove the defect caused your injuries. You need solid proof that connects the issue to what happened. Here’s what to pull together:

  • Take photos and save paperwork: Get clear shots of the bike, the damaged part, and anything else that shows what went wrong. Keep your receipt, registration, and any recall notices you’ve received.
  • Hold onto crash reports and medical records: Police reports, ER paperwork, and any photos from the scene can help show how the defect led to the accident and what you went through afterward.
  • Keep your service and repair history: Maintenance records show you took care of your bike and that the problem wasn’t caused by neglect or wear and tear.
  • Ask an expert to check your bike: If a mechanic or specialist looked at the bike and confirmed the gear failed, that kind of review can really help your case.

This is about showing a clear connection between the defect and the crash. If you’re unsure where to start, a lawyer can help guide you through it and make sure nothing important slips through the cracks.

Deadline to File Lawsuit Against Kawasaki

If you’re even thinking about a case, it’s worth checking the timeline now so you don’t run out of time. Contact Ethen Ostroff Law today.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you bought a 2025 KX450, KX450SR, or KX450X between last June and March, listen up. Kawasaki’s recalling about 3,400 of these competition bikes because of a potentially dangerous crankshaft gear issue. The gear could fail while you’re riding, causing the engine to suddenly cut out—not exactly what you want mid-jump. They’re all lime green models that sold for between $10,500 and $13,600. While Kawasaki has other recalls out there (including some Ninja models), this particular one only affects these three KX bikes.

Grab your VIN from either the right side of the frame near the head pipe or your registration paperwork. Then either:

Head to Kawasaki’s recall page (just Google “Kawasaki recall check”)

  • Use the NHTSA’s recall lookup tool
  • If your bike’s on the list, park it immediately and call your local Kawasaki dealer to schedule the free fix. Still unsure? Their customer service line (866-802-9381) can walk you through it Monday through Friday.
