Pediatrician Dr. Craig Spiegel is at the center of a scandal that has profoundly affected both the medical community and the families and loved ones involved. Allegations suggest he engaged in serious misconduct, including trading prescriptions and money for sexual favors. Court documents also allege sexual abuse of patients under his care. Families affected by these distressing revelations are seeking justice and compensation. In this comprehensive guide, Ethen Ostroff Law delves into the details of the pediatrician drug sex scandal, offering resources and legal avenues for those impacted.

Pediatrician Drug Sex Scandal

Dr. Craig Spiegel: Who Is He?

Dr. Craig Spiegel is a seasoned pediatrician with over 40 years of experience. He earned his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1982. Prior to that, he completed his undergraduate studies at Washington University in St. Louis, graduating with an Associate’s Degree in Biology/Biological Sciences, General, with Magna cum laude honors. Dr. Spiegel currently operates his own medical practice, Craig A. Spiegel, M.D., established since November 1993. He is affiliated with Mercy Hospital St. Louis and SSM Health DePaul Hospital – St. Louis. Dr. Spiegel has also served as a Voluntary Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Washington University.

The Pediatrician Drug Sex Scandal: Indictment and Allegations

Dr. Spiegel is a prominent figure in the St Louis pediatric community, renowned for his expertise and compassionate care. His dedication to children’s health has established him as a respected leader in StL pediatrics and the broader medical field.

However, Dr. Spiegel’s once-pristine reputation came under scrutiny when disturbing allegations surfaced. He was indicted on federal charges for exchanging prescriptions for sexual favors and nude photographs with adult women, many of whom were former patients. The indictment includes 25 counts, such as illegal distribution of controlled substances, making false statements related to health care matters, and conspiracy to distribute controlled substances.

The accusations against Dr. Spiegel are grave, encompassing multiple federal charges involving the illegal distribution of controlled substances. He stands accused of issuing fraudulent prescriptions for opioids, Xanax, and amphetamines to women in exchange for sexual favors and nude photos, despite knowing some had severe addiction issues. Tragically, one woman who received prescriptions from Dr. Spiegel died of a drug overdose in April 2022. Furthermore, the indictment alleges that Dr. Spiegel used others’ identities to conceal the extent of his prescriptions and was aware that some women sold the drugs he prescribed.

Dr. Spiegel’s associate, April Bingham, faces one charge of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances in connection with his alleged actions. The indictment reveals that Dr. Spiegel provided controlled substances to at least 25 individuals, although the actual number is likely higher. These drugs were exchanged for sexual favors and money, with him purportedly persisting in this conduct even after federal authorities raided his clinic. Moreover, the indictment notes that Dr. Spiegel initially met many of these women when they were children and he was their pediatrician, adding to the gravity of the allegations.

Legal Basis for the Charges Against Dr. Spiegel

The charges against Dr. Spiegel stem from three main legal areas:

  • Conspiracy to distribute controlled substances: Dr. Spiegel is charged with one count for participating in a scheme to unlawfully distribute prescription drugs for illicit gains.
  • Illegal distribution of controlled substances: Dr. Spiegel faces 17 counts for unlawfully distributing opioids, Xanax, and amphetamines, exchanging them for sexual favors and other benefits.
  • Making false statements related to health care matters: Dr. Spiegel is accused of six counts for providing fraudulent prescriptions and misrepresenting drug costs under Medicare and Medicaid.

Impact on Victims and Families

The aftermath of the Dr. Spiegel scandal has been severe for victims and their families. They trusted the pediatrician with their children’s care, only to face physical harm, emotional distress, and financial difficulties due to alleged misconduct. Families now struggle with feelings of betrayal and outrage, seeking assistance and support during this challenging time.
