What is Benicar?
Benicar is a type of angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the drug for the U.S. market in 2002 to provide quality treatment for hypertension or high blood pressure.
Consequently, the drug blocks a chemical in the body that tends to narrow and tighten blood vessels. By relaxing and widening blood vessels, the medication can lower your blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
According to the FDA reports, as of 2012, pharmacies have dispensed an estimated 10.6 million Benicar, Benicar HCT, and Azor medications. As a result, it became the highest-selling blood pressure drug in the country.
Side Effects of Benicar
Despite its enormous benefits, Benicar use also leads to various side effects. Some of the common side effects of Benicar include:
- Confusion.
- Dry mouth or thirst.
- Dizziness or fainting.
- Eye problems that may lead to vision loss.
- Fatigue.
- Low blood pressure.
- Muscle pains or cramps.
- Kidney problems.
- Upper respiratory tract infections.
The side effect at issue in current Benicar litigations is sprue-like enteropathy. This potentially serious intestinal problem can produce celiac disease-like symptoms, such as chronic diarrhea and significant weight loss.
In July 2013, the FDA issued a warning about this side effect and ordered a labeling change to reflect the risk of sprue-like enteropathy.
Why Benicar lawsuit are being filed
Patients and their families across the country have been filing Benicar lawsuits against the defendants Daiichi Sankyo as the manufacturer and Forest Laboratories as the marketer. Plaintiffs in the said lawsuits state that Benicar caused them gastrointestinal disorders, specifically, vomiting and sprue-like enteropathy. In addition, they claim that the companies did not properly warn doctors and patients about these side effects of Benicar.
Benicar, also known as olmesartan medoxomil, and its sister drugs, such as Azor and Tribenzor, are used to treat high blood pressure. However, it was found that olmesartan can cause severe gastrointestinal injuries, including the rare disorder sprue-like enteropathy.
The FDA confirmed, in a federal Benicar lawsuit filed in 2014, that drugs that consist of olmesartan could cause sprue-like enteropathy, a disease known to cause severe diarrhea and weight loss.
Now, there are over 2500 patients who have filed Benicar lawsuits against the drug maker Daiichi Sankyo to get financial compensation for injury-related complications and losses since developing intestinal injuries while taking Benicar and its sister drugs.
Under the 2017 Benicar lawsuit settlements terms, Daiichi Sankyo could have walked away from the entire deal if at least 95% of the plaintiffs did not agree to participate.
All but five plaintiffs opted into the settlement as of August 2018. The deal is moving forward even as other litigation continues.
